THE SILENT RIVER
From the Traditional collection
The design flows with a serene rhythm, as if the patterns were tracing the path of water across sacred land. Within the piece, the four elements live in harmony: earth appears as the solid foundation of the skull and the stability of its geometry; water is present in the flowing central forms, moving with softness and continuity; air is suggested through the lightness of the fine lines and the spaces between them; and fire lives as the hidden energy that gives movement, transformation, and spirit to the composition.
The colors black, gray, and white give the artwork a profound and contemplative presence. Black symbolizes the depth of the night, the mystery of the unseen, and the ancestral memory held within the earth. It is the color of silence, introspection, and spiritual protection. Gray represents transition — the space between shadow and light, like mist above a river at dawn. It speaks of balance, calm, and the quiet wisdom found between opposing forces. White brings purity, clarity, and sacred light, like the reflection of the sky upon still water.
Together, these tones create a poetic dialogue between darkness and illumination, movement and stillness, memory and renewal. The repeated patterns recall Zapotec geometry, where every symbol becomes a pathway into harmony, and every line carries the patience of tradition.

Tradition / Meaning / Presence
Cultural symbolism
In the Zapotec tradition described by Cabokero, a naturally found cow skull carries profound meaning. Placed in a home, it is believed to act as a guardian, symbolizing protection and harmony for the household and its inhabitants. Found after the animal’s natural death, these skulls are revered as sacred objects associated with balance and tranquility in the home.
